It is important to note: we carry out all our surveys in a polite, friendly and helpful manner, hopefully for the benefit of all concerned.
Surveys for hull and machinery insurers
London underwriters usually request one, two or three surveys to the JH2013/007 A, B, C and D formats. The items which are inspected or asked about for these surveys have been determined by the joint hull (JH) committee. More information about these surveys is available on the Publications page.
Our hull and machinery surveys can be for a single vessel, a small fleet or a few sample vessels in a larger fleet and will follow the JH2013/007 A and B survey guidelines. The Office Management Assessment, JH2013/07 C survey, is carried out with a visit to the company offices and a chat with the technical managers, DPA and HR manager. Under special circumstances, and with the underwriters approval, a remote meeting via Teams or Zoom can be carried out but this is exceptional, for instance if the shipping company is near a war zone etc.
The requirement for the survey(s) is often part of the hull and machinery policy conditions, as a warranty survey.
As a ship owner or manager, if you are not familiar with these warranted surveys just contact me. I can give you the details of the required survey and what will be surveyed and also what is not surveyed and how long the survey(s) will take and the cost.
It is usual for marine surveying companies to receive payment in advance of the surveys and InserveMS will agree a single price with the shipowner which includes all survey fees, expenses and report writing. Following payment the surveys are arranged, which normally take one or two days to perform. A report is compiled, normally 20 to 30 pages with photographs within seven working days of the surveys being finished. It is normally emailed to the broker in a PDF format who will forward it to the ship owner / managers and the underwriters. The report will contain recommendations aimed at mitigating the risks, improving safety and reliability and of benefit to all parties.

Condition surveys for P&I Clubs
We have carried out P&I condition surveys for most of the clubs over the years and are able to work with their own survey forms and reports or use the international survey forms.
Builder’s risk, Shipyard and Marine Property surveys
The builder’s risk survey follows the JH143 format. Other marine property surveys may need a more bespoke approach, for instance where there is a specific high value project. Insurers may have their own particular requirements and we always try to satisfy these.

Casualty surveys
In a casualty situation we normally act as underwriters appointed surveyors but can act for the ship owner. Having worked for the Salvage Association we are used to the requirements for these surveys.
Other marine surveys
We carry out pre purchase surveys, pre and post charter surveys, surveys of vessels undergoing a single voyage to scrap, bunker surveys and other specific surveys, instructed by ship owners or managers.
Please note, we do not carry out towage approval surveys, cargo surveys or vessel valuations but we can recommend other marine survey companies for these. Surveys can only be carried out in English.
